Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Communication Protocol

This protocol has been written to clarify how communication will take place between the medical and nursing staff on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne and the Police in the event of the child being admitted to PICU, when there is a concern that the child has been injured or harmed by it’s parents or carers.  Fortunately this scenario is a relatively rare one, but it is precisely because of this, that communication pathways need to be established well in advance to ensure that no difficulties or misunderstandings arise.
