Which Safeguarding Children's course is appropriate?
Foundation training (can also be accessed online)
This half-day course is for people who as part of their work role come into unplanned contact with children and young people and with their parents/carers. This training will benefit clerical and support workers whose role brings them into contact with children and families.
Group A training (can also be accessed online)
This full day course is for people who are in contact/work with children and young people and with their parents/carers, regardless of agency or organisational background. Group members have a responsibility to contribute to the safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in the community but do not necessarily have specific organisational responsibility or statutory authority to intervene in the lives of children and their families.The training encompasses the key elements of What To Do If You’re Worried A Child Is Being Abused (Department of Health et al, 2006)
Group B training
This full day course is for people who work regularly with children and young people and adults who are parents/carers. They have considerable professional and organisational responsibility for safeguarding and promoting children’s well being. This group must be working within an inter or multi-agency context. They have to be able to act on child welfare concerns and to contribute appropriately to the processes described in What To Do If You’re Worried A Child Is Being Abused (Department of Health et al, 2006). Participants are expected to come with a basic understanding of the guidance on safeguarding children, of their own roles and responsibilities, and of the Assessment Framework (Department of Health et al, 2000).
Group C training
This full day course is for managers with particular responsibilities for managing or planning safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. They include: strategic and operational managers with a responsibility for supervising safeguarding children practitioners from statutory and non statutory organisations. People within this group hold particular professional/organisational authority and a substantial degree of personal responsibility and autonomy; they work extensively within an inter- or multi-agency context. They must have responsibility for the work of others. Participants are expected to come with a basic understanding of the guidance on safeguarding children.
Refresher training (can also be accessed online)
This half-day course is for people who are in contact/work with children and young people and with their parents/carers, who have undertaken safeguarding training and need a refresher. The period for refreshment is three years. The course is an update of legal changes during the time since their last course.This course is not a stand alone training course and should be attended by workers requiring refresher training after attending NSCB training courses.
